Here we have a very rare and vintage Conrad fretless electric bass guitar. Conrad basses were made in Japan (mostly in the Matsumoku factory) between the 60s and the mid 80s. Based on the design of the logo on the headstock, this can be placed in the early-to-mid 80s.
This bass is everything that a fretless should be. It has that sought-after ‘mwah’ sound, which is especially pronounced and aided by the low-action and brand new flatwound strings which have been fitted.
This is a similar model to one of the basses which Sting played during the 80’s hayday era of The Police. In fact, one of his Conrad basses sold in 2019 at a Planet Hollywood auction for close to £5000 (it was signed and came with a denim vest which he’d worn on stage)!
This bass has had a full and thorough clean and setup. It was in a real state when we bought it so we’ve put a lot of time and love into restoring it. As a part of this restoration, we’ve changed some of the original parts which were beyond repair, namely the machine heads, bridge, tone/volume knobs and backplate.
The end result is a beautiful fretless bass which plays wonderfully and sounds fantastic.
It is in great used condition with a few cosmetic signs of wear and use. There are some light scratches to the rear and sides of the body. We’ve tried to capture these accurately in the photos so please look closely.
